MATERIAM SUPERABAT OPUS
(The work surpassed the material) Ovid, Metamorphoses Iterative notes on Gino Peripoli in a verbigerative form

No!

Figure dove egli si adopera per incidere, scalpellare inaspettati segni criptati quasi urtanti, sgradevoli, posti su superfici colorate esuberanti, sgargianti, quasi Pop.

So many efforts are required to be contemporary, when spirit, body, and being – with all their urgent, paroxysmal expressive force – are continuously magnetized toward immersion in a primordial, metaphysical habitat… A vortex of stimuli, stripped of up‑to‑date cultural ornamentation, attracts Gino Peripoli into a magical territory, a kind of vibrating lair where indeterminate yet fascinating figurative emblems appear: mocking simulacra, grotesque yet creatively stimulating, with abstruse, fantastic connotations and evident anthropomorphic stylizations. These are deeply reassuring to Gino, who hungers for “other” forms – off course, beyond academic aesthetic canons, yet firmly rooted within the archetype of a “personal mythology.”

Gino’s creative path was also a continuous turning back to the origins of art, drawn by the power of the primordial, yet sustained by a profound and reflective knowledge of contemporary art. He seems to appropriate it only to “regress” more effectively toward a stage of authentically stimulating expressiveness, signed by a DNA which, once decoded, reveals a primordial “chemistry.” It becomes clear that he understood how only aboriginal cultures created – and still create – through atemporal modalities, where nature is culture and the created object is a “living” being.

This oscillation between present and past was necessary for him to express himself beyond academic dictates… to reflect on the stimulating work of the many artist friends with whom Gino shared a powerful artistic apprenticeship centred around a charismatic figure decisive for much of contemporary art: Emilio Vedova. A purveyor of positive energy, Vedova was a master at describing, marking, and guiding his students toward the traces of Dark Matter, the cornerstone of all expressiveness, which in him was condensed in the Plurimi, beneath which flowed the sustaining force of existential “clashes of situations.”

As Vedova’s pupil, Peripoli undoubtedly absorbed this high‑voltage current. Yet from it emerged works in which gestural abstraction is present but attacked and metamorphosed, absorbed into figurative presences so original that they quickly proved entirely foreign to those expressive “thefts” perpetrated by some students against Vedova’s language. The academic spoils penetrate Peripoli and almost immediately vanish, transforming into a singular Expressionism, evident in the extraordinarily powerful series of his early faces – disturbed faces, tattooed, furrowed by rhythmic signs and blazing chromatisms that demand attentive viewing, lest the viewer miss the chance to see, with Gino, beyond the ordinary realistic mirror.

He expresses himself through saturated, violent colours, without constraining anatomical compromises: faces painted to the rhythm of high‑mountain jazz – pure, fresh, sparkling, absolute. Acting under pressure, Gino discovers that his poetics are sustained by a growing incompatibility with anything that distracts him from being radically, dramatically devoted to primary values. These imply a desperate search for true formal canons, where humanity exists, along with a secular icon shamelessly deprived of any sacred aura. For Gino, the miracle exists and occurs when base matter turns into poetic matter; this happens through alchemical psychophysical effort, in which making requires humility – the humility of one who knows that “life is full of suffering.”

He needs to manipulate, use, and confront matter, both natural and artificial… Matter is a mountain that Gino must climb every time, but also excavate. There are many “climbers,” but very few “miners” in search of primal matter so as to – in Peripoli’s case – mark it, sign it, as if in those moments he felt like a wolf outside the pack, seeking territories to annex through devastating struggles – not with his peers, but with mysterious forces emerging from shadow and, above all, from the unconscious.

He leaves unmistakable traces along his path …  totems, esoteric silhouettes saturated with his mood and creative impulse, in the hope of creating “objects” that might become nature within nature. From this arise boundary sculptures that he scatters like gigantic shamanic scepters over territories to be artistically civilized.

He uses tree trunks, carving and painting them, displacing eyes, mouths, and limbs into chaotic volumes, ignited by stormy juxtapositions of disfigured faces and screaming colours that shake the solidity of figures undoubtedly sustained by indecipherable meanings. At their core lies the urgency to surround himself with apotropaic images… Gino “assaults” his wooden-bodies with deep grooves and delicate signs, like enveloping umbilical cords that barely restrain hysterical colours, perhaps dictated by the presence‑absence of “Joie de vivre” …

There is in all of this an expressiveness that both shocks and enchants… Are these masks? No! They are works of anti‑cosmetics, works of dignity, furrowed by a harsh and shifting somatics that reveals being what one is, without artifice. The artist, therefore, must be capable of uncovering in faces deformed traces as outward revelations of our personal and social controversies, hypocritically hidden away in domestic recesses like mugshots waiting for time to erase them.

There is nothing banal in accentuating the violent calligraphy that Gino inscribes in his paradoxical yet never grotesque faces. These are figures upon which he engraves, chisels unexpected encrypted signs – almost jarring, unsettling – placed upon exuberant, flamboyant, almost Pop‑like coloured surfaces. He scars and resizes “beauty” because he knows that harmonious proportions and pleasing colours often conceal harsh reality in favour of presumed consoling pleasantness, reassuring illusions that grasp only the rare positive moments of human existence. Gino brings latent discomfort to the surface, showing that the king is not only naked, but also ugly.

For Gino, art is the reflection of existence – or rather, existence itself – overwhelming and involving us in a complex commingling of events that he absorbs into his practice without excluding anything. His adventurous path is a challenge, a climb toward the enigma of being… Reaching the summit becomes the metaphor for conquering the Form‑Figure‑Mother, later to be defined in artistic opus. In this quest Gino often hurts himself, tears his body; this is intrinsic to his physical‑expressive exuberance. Exaggerating, one might say that he sought – or found – bleeding stigmata by digging so deeply, and decided not only to endure them but to display them, revealing them to those who doubted the depth and spirituality of his artistic research, mistaking his troubled faces for merely formal or grotesque devices. In truth, they were “stations” of a genuine secular Via Crucis, where pain was the price to pay for ascending and descending toward expressive purity…

Ah, the exhilaration of detecting traces of poetry… Poetry, so yearned for by every artist, so capricious as to condemn Gino to lifelong forced labour … sentence without end… Yet whoever now knows how to SEE his works will discover that Peripoli was on the right path – or perhaps had even opened a “new” one: dangerous, certainly, but what emotions, my friends… what vertigo… what precipices…

I insist on affirming, addressing those who remain doubtful, that many of Gino’s works impose stigmata even upon those who merely look at them – stigmata understood in the etymological sense of ancient Greek: to “mark” the observer, without invoking the meaning the word has acquired in ecclesiastical language. Let us be clear: no hagiography for Gino, but rather a masterful corpus of works of arcane spirituality – yes, tortured spirituality – irresistibly drawn toward marks-abrasions streaking across excessively vivid faces, seized in drunkenness of light‑life or darkened by thoughts that render them Lombrosian.

I can say that his work embodies a healthy conflictuality that situates it in a condition of perpetual contemporaneity, both within and beyond time, where imagination collides with harsh reality – and it is precisely at this point that poetry is born. All poetry. Including that of Gino Peripoli.
